What's been fixed:These motherboard shipped with a DS12887A soldered on, which means you can't replace them without disassembling the machine and melting metal. It was dead, that's not unusual for these chips of this age. The batteries inside the chip just do not last forever, and this one needed to be replaced. I have removed this chip and soldered a socket in it's place, and put a brand new DS12887A+ in the socket. This means, next time it dies (and it will, it's just the nature of batteries), it's an easy swap for a $12 part, just remove the cover, pull the dead chip out of the socket, push the new on into the socket, no dissasembly, no soldering. The difference between the DS12887A and DS12887A+ is that the + is ROHS3 compliant (they put less toxic awful stuff inside the chip to comply with EU regulations). The onboard IDE controller is limited, an early generation, it won't support even the small 4Gig CF cards. To fix this, I have added a Promise IDE card to host the CF cards. If another drive is added, it should be connected to the Promise card and not the onboard IDE, which is only useful for the IDE optical drive. What hasn't been fixed:The CPU has the FDIV bug. It doesn't meaningfully affect gameplay. It's a piece of history, and a rare one, as Intel eventually did a general recall on all affected CPUs. It was the first product recall for a CPU in history. It was a huge scandal, as Intel first insisted customers prove the bug affected them before they would replace the chip. The public backlash was strong and they were eventually shamed into a general recall for all CPUs, so many of these were returned to Intel and destroyed. Using the bugged CPU daily, typing up papers and playing games, the bug doesn't really show up, but to be safe, please don't use this for engineering or biological research, okay? For more information see the Wikipedia article. The machine also comes with show ready printouts about the Gateway 2000, the Pentium lineup, reviews of the P5-60, the FDIV bug, and an academic writeup on the ethics of Intel's fumbling response to their mistake. This is not a project machine for a tinkerer, this is a turn key, ready to go machine. It has licensed copies of Microsoft DOS 6.22, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, and Windows 95. Buy now, play now. This machine is ready for a museum, office display, game bar, education, or retro enthusiast. It is the embodiment of Gateway 2000's peak, it's was all downhill for the Iowa boys after this magnificent machine. It also comes with six multicolored floppy disks and a USB floppy drive, so you can write disks to use in the machine with a modern computer. This machine, the monitor especially, and it's accessories are large, heavy, and fragile. The original parts are pushing 30 years old by now. I have repaired, restored, and refreshed this machine, but it comes with no warranty. I do not want to ship it, it's pickup only. If you live within 30 miles of Marietta, GA, I will come set it up for you at your home after you buy it, and give you 30 minutes of familiarization training, if you would like.
